James Bell

James Bell is a London-based, award winning Producer, Director & Writer.

His film Birthday Boy won the Co-op Audience Award at BAFTA qualifying Iris Prize and screened on Channel 4 throughout 2022. James believes in the importance of accurately portraying LGBTQ+ lives on screen.

Winner of the Iris Prize Audience Award 2021. Nominated for Best Student Film at BAFTA qualifying

Norwich Film Festival. Available to watch on Channel 4.

- Co-wrote and produced an original screenplay, taking it from script to screen

- Ran a crowd funding campaign utilising social media marketing, raising £13,000 in one month

- Built and managed a team of HoDs and 40+ crew, giving opportunities to LGBTQ+ filmmakers

- Held open auditions for 20+ trans masculine actors

- Secured media interest, notably the support of Ben Hunte, LGBT correspondent for BBC

- Pre-production: scouting locations, contracts, overseeing departments

- Worked with casting director to audition remaining cast

- Oversaw post-production remotely during Covid-19 restrictions: edit, score, motion graphics, comp,

colour grade

- Managed film festival outreach, website and social media presence

- Developed a music video concept in response to the band brief

- Project managed during a Covid-19 lockdown, hosting weekly meetings via Zoom

- Created a detailed storyboard

- Crewed up and secured equipment, negotiating best possible deals

- Produced risk assessments, including Covid-19

- Catered for 30+ cast and crew

- Managed post-production to efficiently achieve desired results

- Secured various interviews + press, gaining 16k views on release

Sugarbabies (TV pilot, 2020)

- Co-wrote and developed a script and TV Bible for an original television pilot

- Sat in on auditions, giving input on who should play the roles

- Worked as Production Designer, crafting the look of the show

- Oversaw creative departments to ensure a consistent feel to the world

- Helped scout locations including a sex dungeon and mansion house

- Attended recces to grasp the limits of space

- Worked with Actor’s in rehearsals

- Helped to problem solve the edit

- Created a music brief for the composer
